In several countries where ExxonMobil operates, malaria continues to have a significant impact on local communities. The good news, however, is the number of deaths and infections continues to decline.
Since 2000, mortality rates have decreased 60 percent.
Between 2000 and 2015, anti-malaria programs ExxonMobil funded have reached more than 125 million people. The company’s support has helped distribute nearly 14 million bed nets, more than 2.5 million rapid diagnostic kits and more than 1.4 million treatments. In other cases, ExxonMobil invests in programs to train health workers. To date, more than 520,000 health workers have been trained.
Norway’s unique contribution
In 1966, three track and field clubs in Oslo, Norway, established the Bislett Alliance and founded the Bislett Games, an international track and field event held at Bislett Stadium in Oslo. ExxonMobil has been the title sponsor for 28 years. Participating athletes have set 69 world records at the venue since the 1920s. The ExxonMobil Bislett Games is part of the International Association of Athletics Federations Diamond League and was broadcast to 141 countries this year.
Race against malaria
For the fifth consecutive year, the Red Cross collaborated with ExxonMobil and the Bislett Alliance to organize the Race Against Malaria corporate relay in order to raise funds and increase awareness about their joint commitment to fight malaria. This year’s race took place just minutes before the opening ceremony of the ExxonMobil Bislett Games. Eight companies took part, each donating about $6,500 to the cause. Those congratulating the winning team included His Serene Highness Prince Albert II of Monaco, the Norwegian general secretary for the Red Cross, the Bislett Alliance chairman and Morten Mauritzen, ExxonMobil’s lead country manager in Norway.
“ExxonMobil is proud to have its brand connected with this impressive track and field event in 28 of the 50 years it has been organized in Norway,” Mauritzen said. “The ExxonMobil Bislett Games is not just about athletics. It provides an important platform for ExxonMobil to raise awareness about malaria.”
