Annual feats and firsts

Though 2016 was generally dominated by politics and sports, we tech buffs delight in the science and engineering news of the year. From driverless trucks to solar planes circling the globe, it was a year of incredible feats and firsts. The people behind these impactful modern-day accomplishments are propelling our creativity ever forward, opening up possibilities unimaginable even decades ago. But unlike decades ago, they’re challenging common conventions with sustainability in mind.

One way ExxonMobil engineers have contributed to this wave of the future is by crafting a motor oil that lasts from January to December, or 20,000 miles, whichever comes first. That’s right—an entire year without an oil change. It saves time, money and… oil. Indeed, if every passenger-vehicle driver in the U.S. extended their oil change interval with Mobil 1 Annual Protection for one full year, it could reduce up to 587 million gallons of used oil waste.

This infographic highlights some of the most forward-thinking science and tech stories that shaped 2016, along with a new invention that spans the duration of an entire year.
