This week, we celebrate the 10th anniversary of the National Math & Science Initiative, which ExxonMobil helped launch in the 2007-2008 school year to expose more American high school students to science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).
In those 10 years, NMSI has helped increase the number of students who participate (and succeed) in academically rigorous STEM courses. NMSI has also encouraged STEM-focused college students to pursue careers in teaching through a partnership with the UTeach Institute.
We are particularly proud of NMSI’s College Readiness Program. Participating schools have seen Advanced Placement qualifying scores in math, science and English increase by 67 percent in the first year the program is offered.
Our current grant to NMSI is supporting work in three key states:
- In Louisiana, students who completed the first year of this three-year program accounted for more than half of the statewide increase in the number of qualifying AP math, science and English scores.
- Participating schools in Pennsylvania significantly increased the percentage of AP qualifying scores among underrepresented students: African-American students by 150 percent and female students by 105 percent.
- And in North Dakota, the number of students who took AP classes and earned qualifying scores increased by 36 percent last year.
These results are significant because studies show that participation in advanced high school coursework is a strong predictor of college success.
We have proudly supported NMSI’s work to improve U.S. math and science education for the past 10 years. We look forward to the next 10 – and beyond.
