Our responsibilities as a corporate citizen

Suzanne McCarron - 06/29/2017

We are proud that the products we bring to market help power the world and drive social and economic progress.

But we also understand ExxonMobil should be judged not just on what we do to meet the world’s growing needs for energy, but also how we do it – all over the world, in dozens of countries on six continents, wherever we operate.

That’s why we publish a corporate citizenship report. We believe it’s important to share our track record with the public. We publish our results annually on our operational performance, corporate governance, social and economic development programs and our work on technologies to lower greenhouse gas emissions.

If you want to know what kind of a company ExxonMobil is, spend some time with our recently published 2016 Corporate Citizenship Report (CCR). Like our Summary Annual Report and our Financial and Operating Review, our CCR helps fill in the picture of what we do each day and how we do it.

We think we have a positive story to share. Highlights of this year’s report include:

  • Best-ever safety performance in 2016, and an 80 percent decrease in our total workforce lost-time incident rate since 2000
  • A 40 percent reduction in combined emissions of volatile organic compounds, sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides over the past 10 years across all of our businesses
  • $1.4 billion spent with minority- and women-owned businesses in the United States in 2016
  • $242 million spent on strategic community investments around the world last year, and
  • $8 billion spent on lower-emission energy solutions since 2000

We are pleased with these results, but not satisfied.

As our Chairman and CEO Darren Woods notes in his letter at the front of the CCR, we will build upon our progress “to secure an even stronger future for our company and the society we serve.” That’s the essence of corporate citizenship.
