Meet Celestia™, the breakthrough catalyst that can help refiners create ultra-low-sulfur diesel while using less energy and producing less emissions. Only 1.5 millimeters in diameter, it is a remarkable piece of technology that can reduce the environmental impact of the commercial transportation network delivering goods all over the world.

Global economic growth plus the consumer shift toward a delivery-first retail experience means commercial transportation activity is on the rise. Because of that growth, demand for fuel for commercial transportation – ships, trains, trucks and planes – is projected to rise by 50 percent through 2040.

An increasing share of that commercial transportation demand will be met by ultra-low-sulfur diesel, a cleaner-burning diesel fuel that contains 97 percent less sulfur than low-sulfur diesel.

Refiners who make ultra-low-sulfur diesel rely on catalysts to efficiently remove sulfur and other impurities. Today, those refiners can do the job better with Celestia, because it is two to three times more active than conventional catalysts in use today.

The catalyst was developed in partnership between ExxonMobil and Albemarle, a global chemical company and catalysts manufacturer.

Thanks to this tiny, energetic catalyst, it can now take less energy – and less emissions – to produce the fuel that powers the global movement of goods from assembly line to doorstep.
