A number of factors are behind these gains, including new lightweight plastics – many produced by ExxonMobil – and durable materials. Those improvements make cars lighter, which increase fuel efficiency and release fewer CO2 emissions in the process.
This is especially impactful because these efficiencies come as more and more people are buying cars. In fact, around the world, the total miles driven by 2040 will reach 14 trillion, a 60 percent increase from today, according to ExxonMobil’s Outlook for Energy report.
