We’ve all been there before.
You’re at the supermarket and impulsively buy a few handfuls of fresh herbs – let’s say basil and Italian parsley. They’ll be perfect for that pasta sauce you’ve been wanting to make. You’re motivated, and so you also get a pound of ripe, juicy tomatoes. And then, most of it lands in your fridge, pushed back, forgotten… never to be seen again, at least until you throw them away because they’re moldy and past their prime.
That’s food waste.
So are harvested tomatoes that fall off a truck, or oranges that don’t make the cut in supermarkets because of their rough appearance. From farms to supermarket aisles to consumers, our food chain is riddled with waste. The United Nations estimates that up to one-third of food fit for human consumption gets lost or wasted worldwide.
The good news is there are some simple solutions that could help put a dent in this big problem. For consumers, better preservation is key, and plastics can help do that.
